Founded in 1958, Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences was. engages its research work mainly in the fields of organic chemistry of natural products, polymer chemistry and physics. Now 395 staffs are working in the institute, in which 90 are senior research personnel and 112 are middle rank ones. The institute is authorized to issue the Master Degree of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, and applied chemistry.
The main research subjects of the institute include macromolecular chemistry, cellulose and lignocellulosics chemistry, organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. It has three research centers. The Analyzing and Testing Center with 13 large and precise instruments, is approved by the Science and Technology Commission of Guangdong Provinceto identify the scientific achievements. It has a library with more than 160000 books and journals and a information room with more than 20000 magazines. Two journals, Guangzhou Chemistry and Journal of Cellulose Science and Technology? are published by the institute and distributed home and abroad..
For 40 years since it was founded, it has made 180 scientific achievements and 50 patents authorized by the Chinese Patent Office. Over 80% of the achievements and patents have been applied or put into production in industry and agriculture, and have made favorable benefit in society and economy. Among of them, 104 achievements have gained different grades of prizes of state, Chinese Academy of Sciences, ministries and commissions of State Council, and Guangdong Province. Over 3000 academic theses are published in domestic and foreign journals.
Besides elementary research, the research orientation of the institute is focused on application and development. To make more high level researching achievements, cultivate large number of talent people and build a modern institute and greet the new challenges of twenty-first century, we will introduce system of competition, optimize research project, improve development of achievements, try to realize the modernization of management, ameliorate structure of sciences and make more capable and energetic research personnel.
Cellulose and Lignocellulosics
The Laboratory of Cellulose and Lignocellulosics Chemistry was established with the approval of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. The main research field includes: (1) fundamental problems of functionality of cellulose; (2) The investigation of structure and application of industrial lignin and (3) bio-transformation of lignocellulose. The long period target is to transform cellulose and its companion , the most abundant renewable resource into chemical and energy raw materials in order to make it possible to be widely used. Thirteen achievements were obtained and 14 patents were issued. Six items have awarded the achievement prizes by by the state, Chinese Academy of Sciences and . Cellulose diacetate 杢he national key project was completed in 1994.It supplied a feasible technique for making the cigarette filter in China; A modified lignosulfonate for tertiary oil recovery has been prepared; The lignin enzyme for bio-pulping has been isolated. A solid-solid phase transfer energy storage material has been developed. The only one domestic journal in cellulose science named Journal of Cellulose Science and Technology are published by the laboratory.
The research areas consist of isolatiion, analysis and modification of the main components in plants from South China and marine natural products from South China Sea. Their research are focused on : (1) discovering reactions, techniques and methods for utilizing main components of plants, such as organic reactions catalyzed by non-noble metal or in supercritical fluids, abstracting useful components of Chinese herbs and plants by supercritical CO2 fluid, (2) finding novel leads for pharmacological substances, and developing techniques for isolation, processing and utilization of components from marine organisms. The goal of their research consists providing novel perfumes, plasticizer possessing special functions, chemical construction materials, raw materials for cosmetics, health caring food and beverage, and medicines. The main research fields are the synthesis and processing technology of new polymer materials, including the synthesis of new polymers from CO2; the recycling of waste plastics; new degradable plastics and environmental friendly polymer materials; fine polymer materials; new polymerization in supercritical CO2 fluid; the utilization of CO2 resource. The two laboratories,Laboratory of polymer Science and Laboratory of CO2 Chemistry, have made many achievements in co-polymerization of CO2; synthetic fiber; and special adhesive electroplating additives, etc.. They have obtained two items of National Invent Award, ten items of important Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangdong Province.
Subject of chemical grouting materials and engineering technology
Chemical grouting is the most effective new technology and method to solve complicated problem dealing with geotechnical reinforcement, in-situ treatment in project construction now. Ten kinds of new chemical grouting materials, e.g., Zhonghua-798 and elastic polyurethane, were developed and applied successfully in many projects such as Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Longyangxia Power Station, the dam in Gezhouba Hydropower Station, and some oil-fields in our country. A series of new distinguishing characteristics grouting materials prepared from natural organic compounds and related technique will be developed, which will be the main developing direction of the chemical grouting subject. Analyzing and Testing Center
The institute has 13 large instrument. The center provide the testing and analyzing of materials for not only all the laboratories, but also for various field of the society. For years, they have made great contribution to the public security and national economy by providing accurate, reliable analyzing data for investigation of criminal cases, quality control of products and testimony of components of material. It is an official identification organization approved by Guangdong Science and Technology Commission.
In 1979, the institute was authorized by the government to grant master degree in the field of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry and physics (M.S). In 1996, it was authorized to grant master degree in applied chemistry. Up till now, 93 postgraduate students have succeeded in fulfilling the requirements for M.S degrees, 40 of the graduated students were enrolled for Ph.D. It co-cultivated 8 Ph.D. students with other institutes and universities. The institute was also approved to grant M.S degree of applied chemistry. 52 students went to abroad to further their study, more than half of them have been back to serve the institute and have become the scientific backbone of the institute. They are undertaking the scientific projects of the state, Chinese Academy of Sciences (or Guangdong Province). All these talented people trained by the institute have been working in the varieties fields of the society. Some of them are working in the leading departments of provincial or municipal government. Now we have 39 postgraduates and six doctorate students working for their degrees in the institute.
International Cooperation and Academic Exchange:
The institute attaches great attention to the exchange and cooperation with foreign scientists. Since 1975, we have received more than 200 batches of about 500 professors and scholars for visiting or lectures. In recent ten years, the international meetings or symposia sponsored by our institute include: Sino-German-Swiss Symposium of Natural Products Chemistry in 1985, International Symposium of Cellulose & Lignocellulosics in 1991 and 1996,Sino-Japanese Symposium of the Effective Utilization of Carbon Resources in 1993,The Symposium on Anchoring and Grouting Techniques in 1994, and IUPAC 6th International Symposium on Macromolecule桵etal Complexes being held in 1995 with Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In order to accelerate the spreading the research achievements, we adopt two methods to develop achievements together with enterprises and set up advanced and new technical enterprises. Guangzhou Chemical Grouting Company
Guangzhou chemical grouting company founded in 1981 is a State-ratified Hi-tech enterprise
qualified for the construction of ground and foundation, and mainly engaging in chemical grouting. For over ten years, the company has completed more than 800 important chemical grouting projects in various fields such as waterproofing and support of deep pits, soft ground treatment, foundation reinforcement and rectification of dangerous buildings etc. Many projects undertaken by the company, including chemical grouting of Nanling tunnel gush of Beijing-Guangzhou double tracking railways, soft bed treatment of Fo-Kai Expressway etc., have respectively won the prizes of important achievements of CAS.
